An "American" dinner for the Basketball Team

Ellen's HTV German basketball team came over for an "American" dinner and a movie. What do you make for an "American" dinner (with ingredients from German grocery stores, of course!)? Chips, salsa, chili, corn bread with maple syrup, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies with chocolate stars and rice krispie treats! Ok - we had a little help from family that brought us some ingredients from the US!

The girls had a great time! They are such nice girls! Salsa with chips was rather new. Corn bread and rice krispie treats were completely new. They watched "Glory Road" and had lots of fun. They gave Ellen a T-shirt with a team picture on it - they all signed the T-shirt and wrote "don't forget us" in German. How nice!

The girl to Ellen's left will be a foreign exchange student in the US next year. They are determined to try to meet.

Maple syrup with cornbread!: Yum. My understanding actually is that this is not just American but entirely rural Midwestern and maybe even Iowan-only. I had a job running open houses in my Chicago dorm and when I tried to serve this, NO ONE had ever seen it before - of a mix of people from all over the country - and no one would try it - they only wanted honey with their cornbread.
When we had cornbread with school lunch in Iowa, the only thing they served with it was maple syrup!!
