The Heidelberger Herbstfest

The first weekend in October was the annual Heidelberger Herbstfest (Fall Festival). Of course we had to attend! We heard and read that the Hauptstrasse would be filled with food stands, music stages, craft stands and up to 250,000 people! They were not exaggerating at all! Here are some pictures from the Herbstfest...

We walked over right when it started because we expected the crowds to increase as the day went on. Here is a side street - one that is perpendicular to the Hauptstrasse with food stands and tables.

Here we are just getting ready to split up -
Ellen spent most of the day with her friends at the Herbstfefst. Behind Jeff is a stage where Christian singers performed during the first part of the day.

The streets are starting to get crowded!

This was a really great Big Band group. We got something to eat and sat and listened to them for quite a while.

Yes, it is a pig being roasted! Daniel was fascinated!

The Middle Ages Platz was just the best - food, music, costumes, crafts, etc.!

You could smell this herbed bread baking all over the Middle Ages Platz. It was topped with sour cream and bacon and was just amazing!!!

It's starting to get crowded!!!

Ellen and her friends...

There was even some American??? food!

We went home in the afternoon and then returned later in the evening. Seeing the fest at the foot of the castle was really amazing! This happened to be in a platz with a music stage and at this time there was a rap group performing - rap at the foot of the Heidelberg Castle... hmmm...

The Flamkuchen was wonderful!!!

We headed home tired but happy. our stomachs full. About 15 minutes after we got home the thunder and lightening started and we got quite a good rain! Our beds felt just right!

I love your roasting pig photo! We forgot our camera in the morning, and when we came back later, no more pig, so we didn't get one!

Hope all is well!
