Weinheim

On Saturday we headed to Weinheim, a short drive from Heidelberg. You can see the town of Weinheim in this photo taken from the mountain. They were having a summer festival and we thought it would be fun to join in the fun. There were rides (you can see the Ferris wheel in the photo below), food stands, craft booths and lots of people -- sound like something familiar? Yes, it did remind us of Tulip Festival in good old OC. There were a few differences, though. We did not see a parade (although there may have been one - we don't know - but if there was we don't think any bands marched in wooden shoes). Perhaps more significantly, what appeared to be church stands (Monica Society-like) served not only wonderful cakes, coffee and ethnic foods but also beer - and each stand served its own special kind. We had a good laugh about that!

Here are some highlights from Weinheim...

A typical street in Weinheim.

There were little canals running throughout the town. Most residents had to drive or walk over little bridges that crossed the canal to get to their homes.

The streets were narrow - by the way - a street here in Europe seems to be defined as anything through which a car can fit :) . If you look at the top of this photo you can just see the ruins of a castle that overlooks Weinheim. We visited this later...

A 1/2 meter brat really hit the spot! It was served on a bagette. Thank goodness there were five of us to share! Guten apetit!

Schloss (castle) park was beautiful!

Since it was getting late we chose to drive, rather than hike the 1 hour trail, to the castle ruins. There was a restaurant in the part of the castle that was still in good condition and they were all set up for a wedding reception. The bride and groom were taking pictures at the castle when we were there. Here are a few castle pics...
